Aboyne Paths and Tracks Group

Aboyne Paths and Tracks Group has been set up by local volunteers with the aim of maintaining, developing and promoting Mid Deeside’s paths and tracks.

We hold regular maintenance mornings on the second Saturday of each month, meeting outside the Victory Hall in Aboyne at 9:30. Everyone is welcome to join these sessions. We do appreciate an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to let us know if you are planning to come along so that we have an idea of numbers.

These sessions generally involve path levelling and clearing away vegetation that has grown into and over the path.

We are working on six core paths that will appear in a leaflet of local walks that we are launching in April 2020. Our first task was to revitalise the riverside path downstream of Aboyne Bridge that was badly damaged by Storm Frank four years ago. It took a couple of visits but the path along this section of the river is now clear of fallen trees, it has been widened where the brambles and bracken had taken over and some steps put in on the steeper sections. It is now a very accessible path and a lovely walk along the banks of the Dee.

Our next mission was to reinstate a section of the Old Deeside Road that had been overgrown by thick gorse. This was a big undertaking but luckily our January maintenance morning saw a massive turn out of 24 volunteers, and we made great progress. A couple more visits to the site has seen the work completed and the path reinstated.

Once we are happy with the condition of the paths on the leaflet, we will be undertaking work on other key paths in the area and developing new routes.

The group has received support from Scotways, Paths for All, Aberdeenshire Council, The Rotary Club, Aboyne Academy, The Boat Inn, Ellie Flather of WagDesign and many local landowners.

APTG is run by a small committee who meet once a month, we are always looking for new committee members. We have a Facebook page - Aboyne Paths and Tracks -with regular updates and notifications.
